Researchers at NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands have created MCAD, the Maritime Cyber Attack Database consisting of cyber incidents impacting the Maritime Sector dating back to 2001.

The database, which was developed in collaboration with students, is now online and publicly available through this website/app. Utilizing open source information, the Maritime IT Security Research Group have collected information on over 295 cyber incidents involving the maritime sector including incidents impacting vessels, ports and other maritime facilities worldwide.

The Universities’ Maritime IT Security research group have created this collection to improve much needed cyber security awareness in the sector and to provide data for further research in this critical area. The criticality and fragility of our supply chains have been demonstrated during the COVID-19 Pandemic. This is particularly evident within the Global Maritime Transportation System (GMTS). The GMTS is a system of systems and includes not just vessels but also waterways, ports, and land-side connections, moving people and goods to and from the water.
